Massive Seymchan Meteorite
Iron, Coarse Octahedrite, IIE Pallasite
Magadan, Russia
Offered on a custom steel stand, this giant complete meteorite provides an unusual and dramatic presentation. Meteorites are fragments of extraterrestrial bodies (asteroids, planets and moons) made up of nickel-iron alloys and stone silicates. Seymchan was discovered by a geological survey party near the Hekandue River, in the Magadan District of Russia. It is believed that Seymchan originated near the core/mantle boundary of a differentiated planetary body thought to be an asteroid (a small, rocky body that orbits the Sun) which was destroyed during the formation of our solar system, approximately 5.5 to 6.0 billion years ago. The present offering is one of the largest meteorites offered for private sale in the past 20 years. It also shows signs of being oriented meaning that it came through the atmosphere in a single direction and wasn't tumbling as most meteorites do.
