Description: 화석이 발견된 미국의 와이오밍주는 신생대뿐 아니라 다른 시기(고생대)의 지층도 발견되는 세계적인 화석산지이다. 그 중에서도 그린리버층은 다양한 어류화석뿐 아니라 식물화석과 곤충화석도 발견되는 곳이다.

이 지역의 지층은 매우 잘 발달되어서 그 두께가 수 미리에서 수 센티미터로 아주 다양한 층을 가지고 있는데 이들의 각 층은 수만에서 수십만 년 간의 다른 나이를 가지고 있다.

화석이 발견되는 층은 이렇게 발굴한다.

즉, 그 지역의 땅에서 발견된 덩어리를 수직으로 전단하면 측면에 줄들이 나온다. 이 줄들은 지층의 측면을 예기함과 동시에 어떤 층(줄)은 화석이 있고,어떤 층(줄)은 화석이 없다. 그 구분은 진한 회색층은 화석이 있고 흰색은 화석이 없다. 이것은 회색에서 검은색이 많을수록 유기물이 풍부한 층을 의미하고 흰색이 많을수록 유기물이 없는 층을 예기한다. 그러므로 우리는 망치나 장비를 이용하여 그 층을 발굴 공략하면 다양한 화석을 만날 수 있다.

  This 50 million year old, Eocene-Era fossil fish comes from one of the world's famous Laggerstatten, the Green River Formation in Wyoming. A small portion of the fish fossils from Green River exhibits such fine preservation. The significant extent of soft-tissue preservation that makes the site famous is evident in this specimen.
This particular fish is Knightia eocaena, the State Fossil of Wyoming. In Fossil Lake, these fish reach their maximum size of 25 cm, but averages roughly half that. Knightia was a schooling fish which is sometimes found in mass mortality layers confined to a single plane, indicative of a single event. Theories as to the reasons include stratified water turnovers as well as poisoning due to blooms of blue-green algae. The modern-day Alewife is known to do so in the Great Lakes of the US.
